Texting

The HIPAA Privacy Rule permits healthcare providers to communicate with patients regarding their healthcare including by phone or in some other manner (e.g. text). However, to reasonably safeguard the individual’s privacy, one should take care to limit the amount of information disclosed in a text message.

If staff receives a text message from a provider requiring a response that would require PHI, staff will call the provider rather than sending a text response. If the response does not require PHI, texting is allowed. For patient safety and privacy purposes, do not use a room number or a patient name in a text message.
